TAZEWELL, Tenn. — A man was arrested in Tazewell after officers accused him of trying to break into a safe at a Taco Bell and assaulting officers while he was arrested.
According to the Tazewell Police Department, officers were called out to the restaurant at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 16. They said a man was acting strange after getting into the lobby area of the restaurant, and when officers arrived employees were outside the Taco Bell looking in.
Officers said they found Jeremy Sulfridge behind the register and the front counter "with stacks of free taco coupons and a key" as he tried to get into the restaurant's safe. Police said they found some marijuana on him, "and the men's soap dispenser was located in his pants."
Police said he was arrested and en route to the jail, he had pulled his handcuffs in front of him. They said Sulfridge then tried to run away once they were at the jail. According to a release, TPD officers and deputies with the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office took him back into custody after he assaulted two of the deputies.
Sulfridge was charged with theft, possession of Schedule VI drugs, attempted escape, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, attempted burglary, public intoxication and vandalism.
