KPD identifies victim tied to South Knoxville shooting

22-year-old, Danishka Sibaja Mejia, was found dead inside the home, but the cause of her death is unclear, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE (4/6): The woman found dead in a South Knoxville home on the morning of April 5 has been identified as Danishka Sibaja Mejia, 22, according to The Knoxville Police Department.

While investigating Mejia's death, officers said Latawyne Osborne was the man who arrived at the UT Medical Center with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Osborne was questioned after his release from the hospital, said KPD.

After the investigation, Osborne was charged with rape in connection to a report filed by Mejia one day before her death.

"Homicide Unit detectives questioned Osborne in reference to Mejia’s death. The investigation into her death remains ongoing at this time," KPD said.

Osborne is being held at Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility, according to the police department.

"On Friday afternoon, KPD Special Operations Squad personnel conducted a search warrant at the home where the sexual assault is alleged to have occurred on Walker Street, detaining multiple individuals for further investigation that is potentially relevant to the ongoing homicide investigation," KPD said.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.

Police are conducting a murder investigation after three people were shot and one woman died from an unknown cause early Friday morning.

Officers responded to a home in the 3200 block of Gilbert Lane in South Knoxville around 1:15 a.m. Friday, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

A 22-year-old woman was found dead inside the home. Her cause of death is unknown and her body was sent to the Knoxville Regional Forensic Center for an autopsy, KPD said.

Another woman and a man, both 23 years old, were also found inside the home—each with one gunshot wound. Neither of their "injuries are expected to be life-threatening," according to KPD.

As officers were conducting their investigation, another man arrived at a local hospital with a "non-life-threatening" gunshot wound, KPD said. The man was treated and released. He is a person of interest in the investigation and is being interviewed by KPD's Homicide Unit.

The department believes the entire incident happened at the Gilbert Lane home, where officers found multiple spent shell casings.

KPD said the investigation remains ongoing and in the early stages.
