KPD: Man charged after one person shot in Knoxville gas station parking lot

Dereke Upton has been charged with aggravated assault. The shooting happened at the Shell on Summit Hill Drive on Saturday afternoon, according to KPD.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE: A man has been charged in connection to a shooting at a Knoxville gas station on Saturday, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

23-year-old Dereke Upton was charged with aggravated assault in connection to the shooting.

KPD said one person was shot in the parking lot of the Shell gas station on Summit Hill Drive.

"Preliminarily, it appears that two men got into an altercation and shots were fired," KPD said. 

One person was shot in the leg and transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to KPD. 

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, KPD said.

"Community engagement response team officers quickly located Upton, who was identified as the suspect from the shooting, at a home on Laurans Avenue on Saturday evening while following up on investigative leads," KPD wrote in a statement. "The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing."

A $10,000 bond has been set.
