Convicted murderer Shawn Smoot has filed a handwritten motion asking for a new trial or acquittal.
Early last month, a jury found Smoot guilty of first-degree murder in the October 2011 death of Brooke Morris, a former girlfriend who also worked for him.
Prosecutors argued that Smoot, 44, shot the 23-year-old and dumped her body in Roane County.
He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Smoot's handwritten motion is dated Aug. 29, which was just 26 days after his conviction.
He argued there was insufficient evidence to determine that the witness testimonies proved he committed the murder and insufficient evidence that he used a deadly weapon.
Smoot specifically claimed a gun shot residue test administered 12-15 hours after the 911 call showed negative results, proving he hadn't fired any weapons.
He finally claimed the trial court committed "prejudicial error" when it denied the motion to supress hearsay evidence.
The document shows that the court filed the handwritten motion on Sept. 6. The court clerk told 10News the state has yet to file a response to Smoot's request.
