ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. — A man was sentenced to 33 years in prison on Wednesday after he was convicted of killing two people inside a Kingston home in May 2022. Russell Johnson, the District Attorney General, said Lonnie Wright was sentenced for the murders of Steve Groover and Cindy Scruggs.

Prosecutors said they asked for the judge to sentence Wright to the maximum number of years available for his charges. Johnson said on social media that the judge ran three six-year sentences consecutively and gave Wright the maximum 15 years in prison on his attempted robbery conviction.

Johnson said Wright has been in jail since his arrest, and he received credit for time served so far.

The Roane County Sheriff's Office said deputies found Groover's and Scruggs' bodies in May 2022 after responding to a call for help at Groover's Buck Creek Road home. Groover was 67 years old, and Scruggs was 62 years old.

Wright was arrested months after deputies found the bodies, in Harriman.
