KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE (4/18): The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the man who was shot at a Fountain City gas station Wednesday afternoon.
TBI identified him as 41-year-old William Charles McBride Jr.
An Exxon employee said she saw McBride about an hour before authorities said a Knoxville police officer shot him.
"I don't know what the problem was," Anna Moore said. "I sat in my vehicle for a little bit and watched, then I decided to go get gas at Pump 3. The guy was on Pump 6, going crazy."
Moore said this wasn't the first time she saw McBride.
It was a couple of months ago when she saw him roaming the gas station.
"I did buy him food," Moore said. "He was trying to fight demons, or whatever you want to call them. I say he did probably need some help."

A man was shot and killed by police at a Fountain City gas station after Knoxville police officers responded on Wednesday, according to the Knoxville Police Department.
KPD said police responded to calls about a man acting aggressively at the Fountain City Exxon on North Broadway, across from the Fountain City Duck Pond Wednesday afternoon. KPD said the man confronted the officer outside the store and was armed with two knives, but information about how he acquired a knife was not immediately available.
According to its preliminary investigation, KPD said the man was shot by a police officer and then taken to a hospital, where he was later declared deceased.
"The officer fired at the man at least one time, striking him at least once," KPD said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said District Attorney General Charme Allen asked it to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting. KPD said TBI is leading the investigation, with the Office of Professional Standards to conduct an internal, administrative investigation into the shooting.
The officer involved has been placed on routine administrative leave, according to KPD.
KPD said no officers were hurt. Additional information, such as the identity of the victim, was not immediately available.
Moore said even though a crime like this shook her, she doesn't let fear dictate her life.
"Yes I was terrified to come to work this morning," Moore said. "But the whole time I was thinking I've got to put my fear behind me, my customers, are family too."
