KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Editor's Note: The Knoxville Police Department inaccurately noted that the victim was also known as Carlos Cortez. KPD later clarified that this was incorrect information.

UPDATE (10/2 11:14 a.m.):

The Knoxville Police Department has provided more details and identified the victim in a fatal Lonsdale area shooting.

41-year-old Knoxvillian Carlos Cozart Yarbrough died after being shot late Tuesday night, according to KPD.

The department said that based on an early investigation, it's believed a group of people were gathered outside in the 1900 block of Minnesota Avenue when the suspected shooter emerged from a nearby dumpster and fired into the crowd. Yarbrough was hit with gunfire and killed.

According to KPD, the shooting appears to be targeted, but there's no evidence to suggest Yarbrough was singled out.

KPD detectives are still reviewing surveillance video and plan on re-canvasing the area on Wednesday to try and find potential witnesses or evidence.

The department said multiple people were present during the shooting and strongly urged anyone with any information to contact the East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at 865-215-7165 or KPD's Homicide Unit directly at 865-215-7317.
