MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Editor's Note: This story was updated to reflect that the 17-year-olds are part of the Hamblen County School System. The Morristown Police Department originally said they were not part of the school system.
UPDATE (11/9): A 17-year-old is facing charges after shooting and wounding another 17-year-old on Tuesday.
The shooting happened across the street from Morristown-Hamblen High School West on Tuesday, police said. According to the Morristown Police Department, officers responded just after 3 p.m. to an apartment complex on Sulphur Springs Road. People reported a lockdown at the high school.
The victim was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. As of Thursday, MPD said his condition was stable.
MPD said the shooter obtained the gun after breaking into a parked vehicle on Lone Oak Drive. The gun was reported missing on Monday.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident. MPD said he is charged with aggravated assault, theft of property, burglary of a motor vehicle and prohibited possession of a handgun.
MPD also said Tuesday afternoon that both 17-year-old males were students of the Hamblen County School System, but emphasized the shooting did not happen on school property.
