Last Cocke County jail escapee caught

The last Cocke County jail escapee was caught Wednesday afternoon in Georgia, according to Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes.

David Frazier was taken into custody about 12:30 p.m. in Forsyth County, Ga., northeast of Atlanta. He was awaiting prosecution on charges of robbery and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

He was detained "without incident," according to the sheriff. He'll be held in the jail until he's extradited to Tennessee.

Six inmates escaped from the Cocke County Annex Jail on Dec. 25, 2016.

Frazier had been considered dangerous.

He was among six inmates who fled the jail annex early Christmas morning in Newport by removing a toilet and fleeing through a hole in the wall where the toilet was situated.

Fontes told 10News this week he hopes to speak with the Cocke County Commission about jail needs. The facility is outdated and outmoded, he said.

For example, there have been problems with water breaks, sewage breaks and general deterioration of the building, he said.

Most of the inmates were caught or turned themselves in by Monday night.

Six inmates escaped from the Cocke County Jail Annex early on the monring of Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016.

The other inmates who fled were identified as John Shehee, Harce Allen, Eric Click, Steven Lewis and Mark Speir.

Fontes expressed thanks for the work of his deputies and detectives as well as the U.S. Marshals Service.

"I want to thank every officer in my department for their dedication," Fontes said in a news release.

He said he was glad no one was hurt while the men were free.

Steven Edward Lewis (left) and John Mark Speir (right) were taken back into custody Sunday, Dec. 25.

"I hope our court system makes an example out of these six individuals who all have criminal records with hopes that it will deter others from committing the act of escape," his statement reads.

As a result of the escape, the men face escape charges. Four other people who authorities allege helped the men afterward also face charges, according to the office. More charges will be filed if others are found to have helped, he said.
