DA: 50-year-old with prior felony convictions in 3 counties sentenced to 15 years for 'pistol-whipping' victim

Larry Lynn Ray, a 50-year-old with 30 prior felony convictions, was convicted of aggravated assault back in May, according to the District Attorney's Office.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knox County District Attorney's Office announced prosecutors obtained a 15-year sentence against a man who "pistol whipped" his victim.

Larry Lynn Ray, a 50-year-old with 30 prior felony convictions, was convicted of aggravated assault on May 31. His prior convictions are out of Knox, Union and Sevier Counties and federal court for especially aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, weapons, theft and drug trafficking cases, the DA's Office said.

On Sept. 24, 2023, the Knox County Sheriff's Office responded to an assault call in South Knoxville. When officers met the victim, the victim described how he and another person were parked in the driveway of a home on Tipton Station Road when Ray opened the driver's side door and put a gun to the back of the victim's head, according to the DA's Office.

Ray "pistol whipped" the victim, striking him with the handle of the gun. The victim then drove away and called 911, the DA's Office said.

After Ray was arrested, he called family members and asked them to contact the victim to convince him not to testify, according to the DA's Office.
