LAFOLLETTE, Tenn. — The LaFollette police department said it is looking into a video making the rounds on social media of one of their officers arresting a man.
The video, shot from a distance, shows the officer cuffing the man on the ground. The person who took the video says the officer hit and kicked the man being arrested, but you don't see that in the video.
LaFollette Police Chief Bill Roehl released a statement about the video.
Roehl said he became aware of the video of the man he identified as Mr. Jones on Sunday night and reviewed it. He also said he spoke with the officer.
"According to the officer, we received a call on Mr. Jones concerning his behavior. When approaching Mr. Jones, he became combative [and] his aggression continued toward the officer and the officer effected the arrest. During the arrest, Mr. Jones was taken to the ground and cuffed," Roehl said in the statement.
Roehl said you could see the cuffing in the video and acknowledged the claims made by the person who took the video.
"With that said, we wil be looking further into the incident. Based on those findings then we will determine our course of action. If we find the officer violated policy or procedure, we will address it. However, if it is found the officer acted appropriately, then we will back that officer," he said.
Roehl said that the man would get his day in court, just like any other person charged with a crime.
"We will be interested to see those findings," he said.
