Victim identified, woman charged after deadly hit-and-run crash on North Broadway in Knoxville

Heather Johns has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Update (8/20):  The Knoxville Police Department said a woman is in custody after a 75-year-old woman died in a hit-and-run crash on North Broadway Monday night.

Heather Johns, 45, was taken into custody by Knoxville Police Monday night after hitting a woman and fleeing the scene, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

The victim, 75-year-old Ollie Jenkins, was pronounced dead at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Officers responded to a call about a crash on North Broadway at Buchanan Avenue around 8:50 p.m.

According to KPD, witnesses of the crash were able to describe Johns' vehicle and potential tag number. Officers then went to the vehicle's registered address on Chickamauga Avenue and found a silver Chevy Equinox with front-end damage.

When officers arrived, Johns was in the driver's seat with the keys still on her. Multiple indicators led officers to believe Johns was under the influence of alcohol, KPD said.

Johns has been taken into custody at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility. She has also been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication.

The investigation of the crash is ongoing. We will update you as we learn more.
