KPD: Preliminary investigation shows illegal drug deal led to deadly East Knoxville shooting

KPD said an illegal drug deal and a robbery is believed to have led to the deadly shooting on Porter Avenue Wednesday.

Knoxville Police said a preliminary investigation shows the victim of a deadly shooting in East Knoxville on Wednesday had agreed to meet people on Porter Avenue to engage in an illegal drug deal.

During the deal, KPD said a robbery was committed and Isiah Lorenz Jones was shot.

"A sizeable sum of money was discovered at the crime scene," KPD said in a Facebook post Thursday.

Authorities said they're following several leads concerning additional suspects.

David Avon Howell III from Knoxville has been charged with one count of Felony Murder and is being held in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $300,000 bond.

Knoxville Police say a man is dead and a suspect has been arrested following a shooting in East Knoxville on Wednesday,

Dispatch said they got a call for a shooting around 2:18 p.m at the 3900 block of Porter Avenue.

KPD said one man on the scene, 20-year-old Isiah Lorenz Jones, was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and later died from his wounds.

Officers took 19-year-old David Avon Howell III from Knoxville into custody as a person of interest. He was later charged with First Degree Murder and is being held at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $300,000 bond.

Additional persons of interest are currently being interviewed by investigators.
