KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A 38-year-old Knoxville woman is charged with murder in the OD death of a man in February 2019.

A Knox County grand jury returned the indictment for second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance Feb. 4 against Amy Jo McMahan. She was booked and served last week, records show.

McMahan is accused of killing William James Madgett, 37, of Knoxville. He died of a fentanyl overdose, charges state.

According to a Knox County Sheriff's Office report, deputies were called to an overdose at 3730 Maryville Pike.

According to records, resident Angela Edmonds told them she awoke to find Madgett unresponsive beside her.

"She stated that the victim had been injecting heroin earlier in the evening," the report states.

An AMR ambulance crew responded and pronounced Madgett dead at the scene.

McMahan is to be arraigned Feb. 28 in the case in Knox County Criminal Court.
