Knox County man accused of causing fatal crash while driving intoxicated

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knox County man faces prosecution after crashing a vehicle while driving intoxicated in 2021, resulting in his passenger's death, records state.

Robert L. Grant, 37, was being held in the Knox County jail in lieu of $150,000 bond. Grant, who has a prior record for robbery in Tennessee, is charged with vehicular homicide in Knox County Criminal Court.

The crash occurred the night of Jan. 31, 2021, on Martin Mill Pike near McCammon Road, according to a Knox County Sheriff's Office report.

Riding with Grant was Patrick M. Grant, 31. County records show they both had addresses on McCammon.

Robert Grant's 2004 Pontiac was speeding north on Martin Mill Pike when it left the road and hit a tree.

He was thrown from the vehicle; Patrick Grant was partially ejected, records state.

Both men had been drinking and both men had evidence of drugs in their system, records state.

Patrick Grant died at the scene; Robert Grant was treated at University of Tennessee Medical Center for injuries.

Robert Grant has robbery convictions from 2012.
