Fugitive accused of killing 2 at Knoxville bar kills himself after being cornered by US Marshals

Zachery Herrera, a 28-year-old, and John Goosie, a 41-year-old, were shot outside of The Pint House entrance near Clinton Highway, according to KPD.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A fugitive accused of shooting and killing two men at a Knoxville bar earlier in July is dead. The U.S. Marshals Service said 40-year-old Kevin Matthews shot and killed himself after being surrounded by authorities at a motel room in Florida on Thursday.

The Knoxville Police Department identified Matthews and another man, 36-year-old Steven Davis, as suspects in the killings of Zachery Herrera, 28, and John Goosie, 41. Herrera and Goosie were both shot outside The Pint House near Clinton Highway in Knoxville early in the morning of July 2.

Davis was taken into custody in the parking lot of an Asheville Highway gas station just before 10 p.m. on July 2, but Matthews evaded capture.

On July 11, U.S. Marshals said they tracked Matthews to a motel room in Jacksonville, Florida at the Extended Stay America on Skinner Lake Drive. They said his girlfriend was with him at the time.

Authorities surrounded the room and were able to get the girlfriend out. Marshals called out to Matthews before they heard the sound of a gun firing.

Marshals said they found Matthews dead in the room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

What Happened at The Pint House?

Based on the investigation, which included looking at The Pint House's surveillance footage, Matthew and Davis approached the entrance of the bar and started assaulting Herrera for reasons that remain unknown. Herrera was a security guard at The Pint House and Goosie was a patron attempting to break up the fight, according to KPD.

At some point during the fight, Matthews pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting both Herrera and Goosie. Herrera died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and Goosie died at the scene, KPD said.

Matthews was being charged with two counts of first-degree murder, while Davis was charged with aggravated assault and violation of parole, according to KPD.

Davis had an arrest record that dates back nearly 20 years in Knox County. He previously pleaded guilty to multiple counts of felony theft. He had a history of trying to run from the police, according to records.

Matthews also had a criminal record. He had arrests for aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, attempted theft, and lesser charges in Ohio. Records show in Michigan, he was arrested for home invasion and burglary.
