Rural King shooting suspect heads to court for bond hearing

18-year-old Larry McBee Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder, KCSO said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The suspect in the fatal shooting behind the Rural King in Halls appeared in Court Wednesday for a bond hearing.

18-year-old Larry McBee Jr. was charged with second-degree murder. He could face additional charges, KCSO said.

On Wednesday, a judge kept his bond at $2 million, while also revoking his bond from a previous arrest in October.

McBee's next court appearance is set for January 30.

McBee was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Friday at a home on McDonald Road in Knoxville. He has since been transported to the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility, according to KCSO.

KCSO said last week an employee, identified as Tristan M. Smith, 23, of Powell, approached McBee, who was shoplifting ammo and bungee cords.

McBee and Smith got into a "shuffle" outside the back of the business—that's when he was fatally shot. McBee ran from the crime scene in the same car he traveled to Rural King in, KCSO said.

McBee's arraignment took place on Friday, according to KCSO.

KCSO said McBee was previously arrested by the Knoxville Police Department for especially aggravated robbery and felony evading.

McBee is accused of shooting a man after a struggle over a gun outside of a home on Coker Avenue on Oct. 24, according to KPD.

Arrest records show that McBee was also arrested on Dec. 5 for possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia.

KCSO said Sheriff Tom Spangler, special units and detectives were out Thursday night into Friday morning looking for McBee. As many as 40 officers were out searching for McBee from Grainger County to Blount County.

“I’m thankful we have the suspect in custody. I want to thank the men and women of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office for their hard work thus far. It’s been a long day and night, and they didn’t stop. Additionally, I’m grateful to the other agencies who assisted us in capturing the suspect, including the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, the Grainger County Sheriff’s Office, the Knoxville Field Office of The FBI and ATF. We received numerous tips from the public throughout the day/night and appreciated their willingness to get involved," Spangler said.

Editor's Note: The Knox County Sheriff's Office originally reported that McBee was 22 years old. They have clarified that McBee is 18 years old.
