JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tennessee — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office took a person into custody after a shooting killed a person and wounded another.
According to Sheriff Jeff Coffey, the shooting happened Tuesday around 9:50 a.m. in the 100 block of Thorngrove Pike in Strawberry Plains. Jefferson and Sevier County deputies responded.
A woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Her condition is unknown, but Coffey said she is reportedly stable and her injuries don't appear to be life-threatening. A patrol unit took her to an ambulance a a quarter mile away from the area because the shooter was still at large at the time.
Another person was found dead beside a camper, according to Coffey.
The suspected male shooter, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Mays, was located inside the camper and there was a short standoff before he was taken into custody, Coffey said. Deputies said he is being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center on charges for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Two other people were present during the shooting but left the scene. Coffey said police are trying to find them and it's unclear if they were involved in the shooting.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is involved in the case and investigators were still at the scene as of late Tuesday morning. Coffey said investigators are not releasing any other information or identities at the moment.
