JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — The superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, Tommy Arnold, said Wednesday that a head basketball coach was arrested on DUI charges Tuesday night after a multi-vehicle crash.
Andy Hill was the head boys basketball coach at Jefferson County High School. He was suspended after the arrest and crash, according to Arnold.
A Jefferson City Police Department report states that on Tuesday, Jan. 23, an officer was dispatched after reports of an F150 truck driving west in the eastbound lane of US-11E. Shortly after, at around 6:56 p.m., the officer learned of a crash on US-11E at East Old Andrew Johnson Highway. The report states that a 911 caller told dispatch the crash involved the same F150 driving on the wrong side of the road.
When an officer arrived on the scene, they approached Hill, who was driving the F150. The officer said they could "immediately smell alcohol coming from his person and he was not coherent," according to the report.
Hill was trying to start his F150 and leave as the officer approached him, but it would not start due to damage caused by the crash, the report states.
According to the report, Hill hit three vehicles and caused injuries to the drivers in two of the vehicles. One driver had blood on their face and a busted nose. The other driver stated their back and neck hurt and that they were going to the hospital.
Hill was checked for injuries by the Jefferson City Fire Department and was arrested after he was unable to conduct standardized field sobriety tests, the report states.
The officer asked Hill three times if he would comply with a consensual blood draw, but he was unable to comprehend due to intoxication, according to the report.
Hill was taken to the Jefferson City Police Department where he stated multiple times that he wanted a lawyer and to speak to his mother, the report states.
Hill was charged with DUI and cited for reckless driving, failure to provide insurance, no driver's license, not exercising due care and driving on the wrong side of the roadway, according to the report.
Kyle Briggs was named the interim head coach, Arnold said. Briggs is listed as an assistant coach in the TSSAA's school directory.
