KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department said officers responded to a hit-and-run on Loves Creek Road Monday evening.
After arriving at the scene, officers found the victim lying in the grass off the road. The Knoxville Fire Department and AMR responded and pronounced the victim deceased.
As police were heading to the scene, they saw a white Ford van on Loves Creek Road near Rutledge Pike with "significant front-end damage." When officers approached the van, the driver, Eliser Correra Romero, ran away but was caught after a brief pursuit, according to KPD.
Romero faces charges including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, driving without a license and no insurance, KPD said. She has since been taken to the Knox County D. Wilson Detention Facility.
Witnesses reported seeing the victim walking along Loves Creek Road early in the evening. They later called 911 once they noticed a large amount of debris on the road and the victim in the grass, according to Knoxville Police.
The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
