KCSO identifies suspect in KPD officer-involved shooting in Fountain City

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office will conduct the investigation, according to KPD policy.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect in the Knoxville Police Department officer-involved shooting in Fountain City on Dec. 20.

The medical examiner has ruled the deceased suspect, 21-year-old Jacob Lane Morgan, died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound, according to officials.

The Knoxville Police Departments Major Crimes Unit was investigating a shooting that occurred on Dec. 16 with multiple victims. One of the victims underwent surgery as a result of the injuries, according to investigators.

During the investigation, Morgan was identified as the shooter, according to officials.

The KPD Violence Reduction Team (VRT), received information that the vehicle believed to be the suspects, a newer model Toyota Tacoma was at a house on Lowe Road, according to officials.

After a failed traffic stop where the vehicle fled, the tag came back registered to Morgan, according to investigators.

VRT officers later found the Toyota Tacoma in the parking lot of the restaurant near the same house, according to officials.

Investigators said they went to the residence to serve three warrants for aggravated assault as a result of the Dec. 16 shooting.

During the attempt to serve the warrants, there was an exchange of gunfire, according to authorities.

According to a tweet from KPD, the shooting happened on Lowe Road in Fountain City off North Broadway. No officers were injured.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office will conduct the investigation, according to KPD policy.

This is the second officer-involved shooting since late November involving a KPD officer. A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed after she  reportedly threatened officers with a military-style knife. KCSO is also conducing that investigation.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation and we will update as information becomes available.
