Alcoa surveillance video shows suspected burglar sneak into woman's car at gas station

Police said the woman was able to fight a man off and run after he hid in the backseat of her car while she was in the store.

ALCOA, Tenn. — Police said a woman is safe and a man is in custody after an incident at a gas station off Alcoa Highway recently.

According to the Alcoa Police Department, a woman stopped at a gas station near Green Acres Flea Market. After she left her car, a man is seen in a video shared by police walking up to the car and entering the backseat.

The woman told police the man hid in the back on the floorboards. When she got back into the car, she said the man grabbed her throat.

Police said the woman was able to fight him off and get free. In the video, the woman is seen running out the car before the man got out and walked away.

Police said on Monday they found and arrested a man, identified as 32-year-old Demarious Moore from Memphis. He was charged with burglary and aggravated assault.

"The APD warns the public to lock car doors and be aware of all surroundings. These incidents do happen, even in our small town. While the subject of this attack is in police custody and off the streets, the APD asks citizens to please stay vigilant and watchful, even if you think you’ll only be out of your vehicle for a few minutes," police said.
