DA: Man sentenced to 41 years after shooting at girlfriend, causing her to hide from him at Knoxville gas station

Jomo Berry was convicted of 15 counts including attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, according to the Knox Co. District Attorney.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knox County District Attorney Charme Allen said that a man who was convicted after shooting at his ex-girlfriend over a dozen times on I-40 was sentenced to 41 years on Tuesday.

45-year-old Jomo Berry was convicted of 15 counts including attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and aggravated stalking, the DA said.

On Dec. 15, 2022, Berry was stalking his ex-girlfriend by following her on I-40. He shot at least 14 times into the driver's side of her car, according to the DA.

The victim managed to drive to a Casey's gas station on Rutledge Pike where two employees hid her in a back storage room and locked the the door. Berry entered the gas station with a gun in his hand and searched for her, the DA said.

When Berry couldn't find the victim, he broke into her car and stole multiple things, according to the DA.

In the video below, you can see the victim run into the gas station. Employees then help her hide in the back as Berry pulls up to the store and walks around the back with the gun in his right hand.

The U.S. Marshals tracked Berry to McKinney, Texas, where he was arrested and brought back to Knoxville. The Knoxville Police Department was already searching for him for two previous offenses where he had shot at the victim.

“Without a doubt, the bravery of the Casey’s employees saved this woman’s life,” Allen said.
