Maryville opens waitlists for public housing, vouchers

The Maryville Housing Authority said the process takes time, but getting on the waitlist is the first step.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Maryville Housing Authority recently reopened several housing waitlists.

Folks can now join the waitlists for housing choice vouchers, public housing and multi-family properties, said Director of the Maryville Housing Authority Julie Sharpe.

The waitlist for housing choice vouchers hasn't been opened since 2022, Sharpe said. The waitlists for public housing and multi-family properties haven't been opened since last summer, she added.

Housing choice voucher amounts can vary depending on family size. Families are given a voucher for a certain amount and then can use that to pay for housing with a landlord who accepts vouchers. The wait time to receive one of these vouchers is about 1.5 years, according to Sharpe.

Sharpe said 321 housing choice vouchers are currently being used. The housing authority can hand out a maximum of 556 vouchers, she said.

Public housing waitlists are also currently open to the public. The housing authority fills housing spaces as they open or others move out, so the wait times for public housing can vary, according to Sharpe.

Waitlists for multi-family properties are also open. Sharpe said these are for elderly and disabled people in need of housing.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides federal aid to housing agencies, who in turn provide housing programs to their communities.

Qualifications for these programs are income-based, Sharpe explained. On the Maryville Housing Authority website, it said eligibility is based on income level, family status and criminal history.

More details about applying are available on the housing authority's website.

Applicants can also come in person to apply at the Maryville Housing Authority's office, located at 311 Atlantic Avenue in Maryville. There is a computer and Wi-Fi available for use and employees will help applicants through the process, Sharpe said.
