Local nonprofit hosts community baby shower for low-income families in need

Gennisi Charitable Birth Services provides free and low-cost education, resources and support surrounding pregnancy to families in need.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A local group is working to make sure all expectant mother in the area have the experiences they want and deserve.

Genissi Charitable Birth Services was founded by Ty Roberts, who is a certified doula. Different from a midwife, a doula provides holistic support for women during their pregnancies.

On April 13, the nonprofit will co-host a community baby shower at The Change Center in Knoxville. The goal is to make sure families, especially low-income families, have free and low-cost support through pregnancy, delivery and postpartum.

"I knew there had to be a way to make that possible so that support wouldn't be another barrier for Black women or women in general for them to be able to have the support they need through their pregnancy," Roberts said.

GCBS will host the event on April 13 from noon to 2 p.m. It is for pregnant moms or those with babies six months or younger. You can register on their website or by calling 865-896-9357. Childcare is available.
