(WBIR) A Lenoir City man is charged with felony theft and sales tax evasion for failing to remit receipts to the state from his auto repair business.
A Knox County grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday against Robert W. Berry Jr., 50, accusing him of 24 counts of felony sales tax evasion and one count of theft of property over $10,000, according to the state Department of Revenue.
State revenue agents arrested Berry at Eurohaus Motorsports LLC in Lenoir City this week, according to the state. He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bond.
Berry is alleged to have failed to remit receipts from his business to the state from January 2011 through January 2013, according to the state.
The department's Special Investigations Section conducted the investigation. The Knox County District Attorney General's Office worked with the department on the case.
If convicted, Berry could be sentenced to a maximum of two years and fined up to $3,000 for each count of attempted sales tax evasion, according tot the state. He also faces up to six years confinement and a fine if convicted of theft.
