31 new laws go into effect on Jan. 1, 2019 in the Volunteer state. Lawmakers discussed and passed the bills last year.
Here are the ones we're watching:
- Wine in grocery stores - Right now, you can buy wine in grocery stores, but only Monday through Saturday. Starting Jan. 6, you can buy wine in a grocery store any time you can buy beer - including Sundays and holidays.
- Lead in school drinking water - This law requires local school districts to come up with a plan to reduce lead contaminants in school drinking water.
- No sanctuary cities - This law prohibits any city in Tennessee from becoming a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants. Right now, there are no sanctuary cities in the state.
- Department of Health opioid hotline - This law allows the department to create a hotline where people can report opioid abuse or diversion. The department is required to refer those reports to a health board or law enforcement.
- Partial prescriptions - This plan allows pharmacists to partially fill an opioid prescription at the request of a patient.
