Knoxville Amazon site starting operations after years of delays, to begin hiring on rolling basis

The company said Friday the Knoxville facility where East Towne Mall once stood is finally ready to ramp up operations. It was originally slated to open in 2022.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — It's been more than three years since work began to build an Amazon delivery station at the former site of East Towne Mall in Northeast Knoxville. On Friday, Amazon said it is finally ready to start operations and hiring.

The facility was announced in 2021 and the building exterior went up in a relatively short amount of time in 2022 after the old mall was bulldozed. It was originally slated to open in 2022, but has sat mostly silent after the opening was delayed due to supply chain challenges. Amazon said it also had to complete some construction inside the building.

On Friday, a representative with Amazon said the company began initial operations at the Knoxville site. It said it will post job openings as needed on a rolling basis to its website at this link. Last year, Amazon said it expected to employ hundreds of people at the delivery station.

"We’re grateful for the support of our local partners and the team is ready to ramp up at this facility and deliver for customers in the area," Amazon said.
