KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Across Tennessee, people can expect to pay around $4.27 per gallon of gasoline as of Monday, according to AAA. That's around two cents less than the state's average of regular, unleaded gasoline — which was set just eleven days ago.
It's also much higher than what people across the state were paying around a year ago. Over last year's Memorial Day weekend, people could expect to pay around $2.87 per gallon of gasoline. Diesel drivers will need to pay around $5.35 for a gallon of fuel over the weekend, too.
Despite the higher price of gasoline, officials said that around 39.2 million people traveled 50 miles or more from home over the weekend.
Knox County's average price of gasoline was slightly under the state's average, at $4.24 per gallon. Three East Tennessee counties are slightly above the state's average price per gallon: Jefferson, Campbell and Monroe counties.
Chattooga was the city with the cheapest gas on average in Tennessee on Monday, with the average price of gas at around $4.20 per gallon.
The state's average price of gasoline has managed to stay below the national average. Across the U.S. the average price of gas is around $4.62 per gallon. Last Memorial Day, the national average price was around $3.05 per gallon.
