KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Rankin Restaurant, otherwise known as Knoxville's oldest restaurant, closed in late February. Many regulars there wondered where they would turn for iconic meals and good food.
They may not need to look hard. An East Tennessee diner best known for its milkshakes and sundaes plans to open a new branch in the same building. The Diner at Twisters Shakes and Sundaes said they hope to open the branch in mid-April.
They routinely serve meals like hot dogs and french fries, hot roast beef sandwiches, salmon patties and much more. However, they are best known for their milkshakes after they were named one of the best places to get one by a community media company.
They have two other locations, with one located off Washington Pike and another located in Corryton.
While the restaurant is well known in East Tennessee, it will have big shoes to fill. Rankin Restaurant closed on Feb. 25 after it was sold to a private investor, after operating for almost 69 years. During that time, they established a community of regular diners who went for both plates of biscuits and gravy and to enjoy time with one another.
Twisters will be located at 2200 North Central Street.
