Respiratory illness in dogs not reported at Young Williams Animal Center

If you're worried for your pet, limit your dog's contact with others and talk to your vet about vaccinations.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Veterinarian Office said it has not gotten a confirmed report of a mysterious illness that's affecting dogs, but a veterinarian in Kingsport and another in Nashville believe it could be.

The potentially deadly respiratory disease has been reported in about 15 states. Staff at Young Williams Animal Center in Knoxville said they have not seen symptoms in their animals.

YWAC encourages people with pets to be vigilant if they have concerns.

"See what the Veterinary School here at the University of Tennessee is putting out because they're going to have the closest resources," Dr. Lisa Chassey, the shelter medical director at Young Williams Animal Center, said. "Talk to your veterinarian. Don't just see something on Facebook and like it and assume it's always going to be the most researched."

Dr. Chassey also said if you're worried for your pet, limit your dog's contact with others and talk to your vet about vaccinations.
