New moms adapting as OB-GYN offices issue restrictions

Jessie Rainey is due in July and for her next appointment, she will have to go in alone.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Jessie Rainey has some big news, she's going to be a mom.

"I'm so excited," she said. "I'm having a little boy."

While 2020 will bring her a new bundle of joy, it has also brought some uneasy news.

"I am a little nervous with everything going on," she said.

By everything, she means the global COVID-19 pandemic. Out of caution, hospitals across the country, including some in East Tennessee, are now issuing restrictions. Fort Sanders Ob-Gyn has decided to issue its own rules.

Rainey has an appointment there in the coming days, but she also sees an Ob-Gyn in Oak Ridge, which she said has implemented much of the same.

However, she has no objection to the decision.

"I understand where they are coming from trying to keep everybody safe, I'm 100% on their side about it," she said.

Rainey plans to go to her next appointment alone but have her boyfriend wait outside. That was not originally her plan.

"Yea, I was actually gonna take my grandmother and my mother to this appointment because it is high risk and they are doing an ultrasound and they really wanted to see an ultrasound," she said.

Her grandma took the news well, but her mom was a little disappointed.

"She's just excited for all of it and it just let her down," she said.

While the year has brought some unexpected challenges, Rainey just wants other moms to be safe.

"Follow the restrictions, follow everything to try to avoid getting the sickness as much as possible," she said.

If you are ever having a moment, remember all of the happiness to come.

"You still have that life growing, you still have that to look forward to," she said.
