KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A miniature version of Knoxville has been decorated with plenty of lights and festive stands, giving families a chance to walk around small versions of the city's most iconic buildings all under a holiday glow.
The first day of Safety City Christmas began Tuesday, an annual event that brings families to Safety City so kids can ride their bikes, trikes and scooters safely on a fabricated road. During the summer, Safety City is used to give children hands-on lessons about vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle and fire safety.
In December, it is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays except for the last two weeks of the month. A full list of the days when Safety City Christmas is open is available below.
- Dec. 3 - 5
- Dec. 10 - 12
- Dec. 17 - 19
Guests can bring bicycles, non-motorized scooters, push cars, strollers and wagons to ride through Safety City — or just walk through the tiny cityscape. The event is free, but all riders need to stay on the street and leave sidewalks clear for pedestrians.
Children also need to be accompanied by an adult at all times, and no pets are allowed. The Safety City Playground is located at 165 South Concord Street in Knoxville.
