KNOXVILLE, Tenn — Halloween is just two days away, and as the kids get ready to head out for trick or treating, it's always good to keep some general safety tips in mind.
Trick-or-treaters are getting their costumes ready for Tuesday night to celebrate Halloween in Knoxville. First responders say that the day can be a busy time for calls.
"We'll sometimes see people putting candles in jack-o-lanterns which causes a fire," Knoxville City Assistant Fire Chief Mark Willbanks. "We encourage people to use electric lights in your jack-o-lanterns. We also see occasionally people hit by vehicles."
While it's a high alert night for first responders, Willbanks said that Knoxville is considered one of the safer cities in Tennessee for trick-or-treaters.
"We have a lot of opportunities to stay safe because of the multitude of sidewalks," he said.
Some good practices to remember on Halloween night are to:
- Wear bright-colored clothes on your costume
- Bring a flashlight for when it gets dark
- Avoid walking on roads
"Stay in neighborhoods you know, always go with an adult, don't go into any houses. and just remain vigilant of your surroundings," Willbanks said.
The fire department also said that "Trunk or Treat's" are a great trick-or-treating opportunity to remain safe while having fun.
