Tennessee quarterbacks visit 9-year-old Vols fan in hospital being treated for genetic disorder

Charleston Horton is a 9-year-old girl undergoing treatment at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital. Two Tennessee quarterbacks recently visited her.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Some student-athletes from the University of Tennessee stopped by the East Tennessee Children's Hospital recently to visit a 9-year-old fan being treated for a genetic disorder.

Charleston Horton, otherwise known as Charli, has been in the hospital for more than a week undergoing treatment for several health problems and a genetic disorder.

Her mom said Charli has Baraistser-Winter syndrome,  a complex medical condition that affects the development of different parts of the body.

Her family said she hopes to be released by kickoff for the Vols' season opener.

"She loves baby dolls, chicken — but most of all, she loves the Vols," said Whitney Horton, her mother. "They all know her blood runs orange."

While being treated, she was visited by Gaston Moore and Jake Merklinger — both quarterbacks for Tennessee. They brought her a signed football and spoke with her about the team, Mickey Mouse and about how she was feeling.

"Her jaw just dropped as she stared in shock," said Whitney. "They just talked with her and tossed football with her."

The players visited after Charlie's cousin posted about her condition on social media, asking for Vols fans to help make her dreams come true and meet some players on the team.

"I'll do this and see what reach it can get," said Zach Owens, her cousin.

Just days after sharing Charlie's story online, his post reached people from Big Orange Country to Gamecock fans.

"It was really heartwarming to see everyone jump in," said Owens.

Her family said they're thankful for the support they've received from SEC fans across the country who helped spread the word. While Charlie plans to leave the hospital on Saturday, there is still one more surprise waiting for her by Tennessee Football.
