Knox Co. Mobile Meals volunteers brave the cold and son snow check in with elderly neighbors

As crews worked to clear roads across Knox County, the Community Action Committee was busy in the kitchen preparing meals for vulnerable people.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Throughout the week, Knox County crews have been braving snow and cold as a winter storm dumped several inches of snow across the area. At the same time, volunteers at the Community Action Committee were busy in the kitchen preparing meals for vulnerable neighbors.

Volunteers then took those meals and traveled across the area, delivering food to people who needed it.

"There are so many seniors in our community that don't have any way of getting out, or anyone to help. Especially on a day like today. So, it's important we get to them where they are and check-in," said Jane Gerard, a volunteer for the Mobile Meals program run through the CAC. "Find out if they're still doing okay, check up on them, give them a call and see how they are. Just checking up on them when no one else can."

She said she has been volunteering with Mobile Meals since the Thanksgiving holiday. The program delivered more than 700 meals on Wednesday, and several volunteers lined up with cars capable of traversing hazardous roads.

"I'm just doing what I would want someone to do for my mom or grandma, just helping out," said Gerard.

Despite cold and icy conditions, the CAC said it saw more volunteers help out Wednesday than it usually does.
