'May his service and sacrifice never be forgotten' | Neyland Stadium turns blue honoring fallen BCSO Deputy Greg McCowan

"Our law enforcement partners from all around the area are no strangers to Rocky Top, and their help year-round is invaluable."

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Blount County Sheriff's Deputy Greg McCowan was laid to rest Wednesday after being killed in the line of duty. Deputy Shelby Eggers was also shot and is recovering.

The University of Tennessee paid its respects to McCowan by lighting up the night with blue lights at Neyland Stadium.

"We’ve known for years those Neyland Lights are something else… and tonight, with the help and support of Tennessee Athletics, they are shining blue for Blount County Sheriff's Office fallen deputy, Greg McCowan," the University of Tennessee Police Department said in a post. "Our law enforcement partners from all around the area are no strangers to Rocky Top, and their help year-round is invaluable."

The East Tennessee community paid its respects to the fallen deputy by laying flowers on his patrol car, donating to his family and attending the procession. 

"Through the night, those Neyland Lights will continue to shine blue," UTPD said. "May his service and sacrifice never be forgotten."
