KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On Wednesday, the 10News team helped prepare and serve around 200 meals at The Love Kitchen.
The kitchen started back in 1986 with twin sisters, Helen and Ellen. They're both gone now, but their mission to serve up love remains. It works to make sure that anyone who is hungry can access food. The nonprofit's website says it serves around 166,400 meals every year and engages around 1,350 volunteers. Every week, it serves around 3,200 meals.
Most of the food is donated by East Tennessee grocery stores while farmers and specialty shops also bring in fresh vegetables, fruit and baked goods. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays for lunch.
The Love Kitchen also acts as a community center, supporting families and children throughout the area.
Anyone who wants to volunteer at The Love Kitchen can find more information about what they should bring and how to sign up on the nonprofit's website.
