UT Medical Center staff delivered 4,722 babies in 2023, an increase from the previous year

UT Medical Center previously said that in 2022, staff delivered 4,430 babies that year.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Thousands of infants were welcomed into the world at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 2023. Specifically, staff said they delivered 4,722 babies over the last year — an increase compared to 2022.

At the end of 2022, UT Medical Center said staff delivered 4,430 babies. Staff at the Center for Women and Infants is responsible for delivering babies while also providing other kinds of health services like mammograms, cervical cancer treatments and ultrasounds.

It also offers a neonatal intensive care unit, offering 67 beds for infants who are born prematurely or who are critically ill and in need of special care.

"We thank our exceptional team for all that they do and are looking forward to another outstanding year in 2024! We are so grateful and honored for every family who entrusted us with their care. Congratulations to all," the medical center said on social media.

Other East Tennessee hospitals reported hundreds and thousands of babies welcomed to the world over 2023. The LeConte Medical Center said 665 babies were delivered there in 2023, while Cumberland Medical Center said staff delivered 718 babies. The Methodist Medical Center reported 495 babies born, and the Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System reported 832 babies were delivered.

Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center reported 3,661 babies born, and Parkwest Medical Center reported 1,831 babies born. Both hospitals are located in Knoxville.

The total number of babies born at Covenant Heath hospitals in Knoxville was 5,492, according to a spokesperson for the healthcare company.
