Knoxville's annual 5K Race Against Cancer is getting a new sponsor - the Subway sandwich chain.

Thompson Cancer Survival Center and Covenant Health announced the change Friday. The race formerly was sponsored by area barbecue chain Buddy's. On hand for the announcement was Jared Fogle, who has gained national fame after losing about 200 pounds by adopting a diet that included Subway sandwiches.

The race is traditionally held in

November with a start and finish at World's Fair Park. This year it will be Sunday, Nov. 8.

Participants are welcome to run or walk the course.

The race began in 1993. It was named after restaurateur Buddy Smothers, who fought cancer and died in 1992.

Since its inception it has raised more than $5 million for cancer education and care in East Tennessee.

This year's chairman is Michael Holtz, a cancer survivor. His cancer was found during a colonoscopy, and he's been a longtime supporter of cancer screenings.
