KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Elephant Sanctuary announced that Jana the elephant died at the age of 43.
Jana was taken from Zoo Knoxville to the sanctuary in May as part of a care plan that ensures she has companionship for the rest of her life.
The sanctuary said Jana's health declined in recent weeks and that her "reduced mobility" led to multiple falls, severely impacting her quality of life. They made the decision to euthanize her due to her health issues, the inability to stand on her own and the escalating pain she experienced.
“We are devastated by the loss of Jana,” The Elephant Sanctuary CEO Janice Zeitlin said. “At The Sanctuary, we are committed to providing individualized care for aging elephants — their comfort and well-being is always of primary importance. End-of-life care comes with challenges, loss, and heartbreak. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sanctuary Staff, Zoo Knoxville, and all those who have tirelessly dedicated themselves to providing Jana compassion and care.”
According to the sanctuary, Nosey was with Jana during her final days standing by her side and offering gentle touches.
After Jana died, Nosey was close to her and was given access to her until her burial.
"Jana was intelligent, spirited, and confident and we feel very fortunate to have the privilege of knowing her during her years at Zoo Knoxville," Zoo Knoxville CEO and President Lisa New said. "She spent her last months just as we hoped, exploring the hills and forests in Hohenwald, swimming in the water holes, and making a new friend with Nosey. While we are heartbroken at her loss, we are comforted that she left this world surrounded by people who loved and cared for her as we did."
