The shelter, which is located in Madisonville, is one of the newest animal shelters to participate in the PetSmart Charities Rescue Wagon program. The program transports dogs and puppies to animal shelters up north that generally have fewer pets waiting for their forever homes. Most Rescue Waggin' shelters say the dogs are generally adopted within a week of arriving at the destination shelters.

Eighteen puppies were transported from the Monroe County Animal Shelter in September on the first Rescue Waggin' ride. The shelter says they have been preparing to join the program for several months.

Each month, the shelter will select a group of dogs and puppies to transport with the program. They must pass a behavior assessment before being accepted.

The Rescue Waggin' program says it has helped save 75,000 dogs and puppies since 2004.
