Volunteers and foster families needed for animal shelter

Monroe County Friends of Animals depends on people in the community to help care for animals at the Monroe County Animal Shelter and in their homes

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. — Monroe County Friends of Animals supports the Monroe County Animal Shelter.

The mission of the non-profit is to provide for and continuously improve the health, happiness and fortunes of the homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Monroe County.

Cathy Barrett is the Foster and Volunteer Coordinator.

She said inmates from the county jail used to help clean the shelter but the pandemic ended that arrangement. Now the shelter staff and volunteers handle all the cleaning.

Volunteers also walk the dogs and interact with the animals to socialize them.

There's a great need for more volunteers and also for people to foster animals from the shelter.

"We can get more animals out of the shelter environment which is good for them and it's fun for the people who are fostering," Cathy Barrett said.

The shelter provides food, toys, leashes, whatever the foster family needs to care for the animal for about two weeks. Then the animals are adopted locally or takes to places in the north where there is a demand for adoptable pets.
