Knoxville — What started as a five-day field trip to see the total solar eclipse has turned into a long-time relationship between Fulton High School and Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.
Caleb Carlton, a leader at Tremont, says they wanted to build on the experience they shared with the students during the eclipse excursion, so they developed a two-year program to start next August.
20 rising high school juniors will be selected to participate. The students will start with a four-night trip to Tremont before returning to Knoxville to mentor younger students about the Tremont experience.
During their senior year, Carlton says the students will return for another four-night trip and ultimately form relationships with community professions to help them explore career paths.
On Monday, they kicked off a social media campaign to raise money for the new program called “Environmental and Community Leadership Fellows.” They need $49,988 to fund the fellowship.
