Al the giant tortoise carves a pumpkin at Zoo Knoxville, sort of

Al got a Halloween treat this week at Zoo Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tis the Halloween season, so there's no more perfect snack this time of year than anything involving pumpkins.

At Zoo Knoxville, they skipped the spice and just served up the whole gourd to Al, the Aldabra giant tortoise.

The zoo released video Friday of Al checking out his big orange snack. The big guy had a little trouble getting started, so a keeper cracked the orange shell open for him. From then on, Al took over, munching the pumpkin inside and out!

Al is in his winter home in the Zoo Knoxville greenhouse right now. That's where he and fellow tortoise Tex live during the colder weather.

Al and Tex are Zoo Knoxville’s oldest residents; Al is estimated to be more than 120 years old and Tex more than 80 years old.
