(WBIR) - NBC is going forward with plans to present an original movie called "Coat of Many Colors" that will be based on entertainer Dolly Parton's humble Sevier County upbringing.
Parton appeared Monday morning in New York as the network made its Primetime Preview Presentation, and she will be executive producer of the movie.
Parton talked with 10News last month about her plans to work with NBC.
NBC has a development agreement with Parton that includes a series of "standalone TV movies based on Parton's songs, stories and life. They will contain music but won't be musicals, with Parton possibly appearing in some," according to Dolly Parton Entertainment.
The upcoming movie takes its name from her song of the same title, which she wrote as a young musician looking back at her childhood. Parton's mother made the coat for Parton out of rags. Her mother compared it to the biblical Joseph's coat.
As Parton recalled in the song, classmates laughed and made fun of her when she wore it to school so proudly:
"But they didn't understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
Made just for me"
The movie will air next season.
