'Knoxville' the musical opens this week at Clarence Brown Theatre

The musical is adapted from James Agee's autobiographical, Pulitzer Prize-winning "A Death in the Family."

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A new musical is coming to the Clarence Brown Theatre stage this week.

Directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes, "Knoxville" is based on James Agee’s autobiographical, Pulitzer Prize-winning "A Death in the Family."

The story begins as an adult Agee struggles to write his greatest work about the event that touched his young life and its effect on his family and his future.

"Knoxville" is a universal coming-of-age story about family, faith, and love—and about the boy who will grow up to write it.

“The musical Knoxville embodies our mission to produce challenging and beautiful works for our community,” Kenneth Martin, CBT artistic director, said. “We are incredibly proud to have this touching story be the opening production for our 2024-2025 season. And with the level of talent that is a part of this show, it is truly going to be a must-see event.”

Many known Broadway names have come to be a part of "Knoxville," including Rhodes, who recently directed and choreographed the Broadway revival of "Spamalot."

“With a story so tender and the incredible music, you will leave the theatre with a deeper appreciation for where you come from and the people who raised you,” Rhodes said. “The creative team behind this production is a powerhouse. The great Frank Galati, teamed up again with Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty to tackle James Agee. This is an event of a lifetime. I am honored to be a part of it.”
