Special Olympics Tennessee hosting annual winter games in Gatlinburg on Sunday

Athletes will compete in alpine skiing, snowboarding, speed skating, 3v3 basketball and a fitness combine.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Athletes will compete in Gatlinburg on Sunday during Special Olympics Tennessee's annual Winter Games. It will be at Ober Mountain and the games will include five sports with more than 400 athletes from across the state participating, according to a release from organizers.

Those athletes will compete in alpine skiing, snowboarding, speed skating, 3v3 basketball as well as a fitness combine. They will compete in divisions based on age and ability.

Adam Germek, the president of Special Olympics Tennessee, said this year's Winter Games are expected to be the biggest yet.

“We continue to add events to make our state events more inclusive for athletes across the state. Last year, we added 3v3 basketball and saw a tremendous amount of participation. This year, we’ve added a Fitness Combine for athletes to compete and showcase their athletic skills in training," he said.

Opening ceremonies will start at around 6:45 p.m. at the Gatlinburg Convention Center on Jan. 28 with a presentation from Wellpoint, a supporter of the games. Organizers will also kick off the first Law Enforcement Torch Run of 2024, with participants from several East Tennessee law enforcement agencies.

On Monday, the first day of competition will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a mountain torch relay followed by the traditional lighting of the Special Olympics Tennessee cauldron.

Throughout the week, athletes will also have the chance to enjoy group dinners and a celebration party after the events. All competitions are open to the public.
