KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville's chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, a national and historic Black sorority, is planning several events for "May Week." The events are meant to benefit the community, such as by helping women find hygiene products and helping people achieve healthier finances.
The events are named "May Week: Class is in Session." It's part of a national push for events that emphasize the importance of higher education. A full list of the events and the times they're happening on is available below.
- Menstrual Hygiene Day (April 26): This day is meant to advocate for menstrual health and hygiene for all women and girls. People can support the sorority's awareness and involvement committee by donating feminine pad products by April 26. Monetary donations can also be made online.
- CPR Certification Workshop (April 27, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.): The Knoxville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.'s Emergency Response Team and Physical and Mental Health Committee are hosting a preparedness workshop showcasing the application of CPR and AED use through demonstrations. People can get certified at the event, and learn about breast and colon cancer awareness and screening information as well as hypertension and diabetes. The free workshop will take place at The Change Center, located at 203 Harriet Tubman St. Refreshments will be served, and people need to register to attend by April 25.
- Delta Excellence in Education program Culmination (April 28, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.): This event is meant to celebrate young people in the sorority's programs. Anyone interested in having their teens participate in the sorority's education programs can attend its wrap-up program and see what it did this year. The event will be at the Haslam-Sansom Ministry Complex in Lonsdale, located at 1740 Texas Avenue.
- Credit Repair and Financial Planning Virtual Seminar (April 30, 6 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.): This event is meant to help people fix their credit problems and find ways towards healthier finances. Presenters include Kristie Blevins, the Financial WellBeing Program Manager at Operation Hope, and DaVett Jones, who wrote "Who Taught You How to Be Broke?" People can register for the event online.
