Don't let boating season sneak up on you. There's a safety class you can take.

Organizers said it’s the first class in Knoxville to offer an on-the-water training.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — With Spring weather and boating season upon us, the Knoxville  Power Squadron (America’s Boating Club) is offering a boating safety class this week.

Organizers said it’s the first class in Knoxville to offer an on-the-water component in addition to sessions in the classroom.

The four-day course is geared towards anyone who wants to feel more comfortable on the water. Students will learn boat handling, docking, trailering, safety equipment, rules of the road, knots and more.

On the third day of the course, participants will get to handle pontoon boats at Fort Loudon Marina to put their knowledge to the test.

To be in compliance with state law, any Tennessee resident born after Jan. 1, 1989, must have the TWRA-issued Boating Safety Education certificate, and the course prepares residents to pass the TWRA exam to earn that certificate.

The course is scheduled for April 23, 25, 27 and 30.
